The steps to become a social worker in California depend on the type of work you plan to pursue. A bachelor’s degree can prepare you for some entry-level and generalist social services positions, while advanced roles commonly require a Master of Social Work (MSW). California public-school social workers follow a separate credentialing process. 1. **Apply for ASW registration.**  Graduates submit an application, official transcripts, fingerprints, and other required documentation to the BBS. A criminal background check is also part of the process. Applicants generally cannot accrue postdegree supervised experience in California until registered as Associate Clinical Social Workers (ASWs). Under the state’s 90-day rule, graduates whose applications are received within 90 days of degree conferral may be able to count qualifying experience earned before registration is issued. To count those hours, the employer must require Live Scan fingerprinting before the experience begins, and the applicant must retain the completed form. This employer-required Live Scan is separate from the fingerprinting required for the ASW application. ASW registration permits supervised clinical work; it is not an independent-practice license.    
2. **Complete required coursework.**  California requires instruction addressing state law and ethics and specified clinical-practice topics. Depending on when and where applicants earned their MSW, requirements may cover areas such as suicide risk assessment, telehealth, child abuse reporting, human sexuality, substance use, aging, and partner abuse. Some requirements may already be incorporated into a California MSW program, while other applicants may need additional coursework. Candidates should use the applicable BBS instructions to determine which requirements apply to them.    
3. **Accrue supervised experience.**  ASWs must complete 3,000 hours of supervised postdegree experience over at least 104 weeks. The work setting, professional activities, supervisor qualifications, amount of supervision, and documentation must comply with BBS rules. Because noncompliant hours may not count, ASWs should establish an eligible supervision arrangement and maintain the required records from the beginning.    
4. **Complete the examination requirements.**  Until they pass, ASWs must take the California Law and Ethics Examination at least once during each one-year registration renewal cycle. Passing is required to obtain a subsequent ASW registration. After completing the education, coursework, and supervised-experience requirements, applicants submit an LCSW licensure application to the BBS. Once that application is approved and the Law and Ethics Examination has been passed, they may register for the Association of Social Work Boards Clinical Examination.    
5. **Request license issuance.**  Passing the clinical examination does not automatically activate an LCSW license. Applicants must request initial license issuance and pay the required fee within one year of passing the examination. Once the BBS issues the license, the individual may practice independently within the LCSW scope of practice.    
 Applicants educated or licensed outside California may follow a different BBS pathway and may need additional coursework or documentation. Because application forms and licensing rules can change, candidates should consult the current BBS instructions at each stage. 
  
 ## **How Long Does It Take to Become a Social Worker in California?**  
  
 The timeline depends on the position and credential you intend to pursue. A full-time BSW generally takes about four years. Students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field commonly spend about two additional years in a traditional MSW program. Qualified BSW graduates may complete an advanced-standing MSW in approximately one year, although program structures vary. 
  
 Graduates pursuing LCSW licensure must then complete at least 104 weeks of qualifying supervised experience. Examination preparation, BBS application review, and license issuance add time beyond that minimum. Part-time enrollment, field-placement availability, employment circumstances, and the rate at which an ASW accrues acceptable hours can also lengthen the process.
